The Chinese internet, in the vocabulary it uses
The Chinese internet is a parallel universe. WhatsApp, Messenger, Venmo, Uber, and Signal collapse into one app called 微信. Twitter's niche is filled by 微博. TikTok is an export of the original, 抖音. Instagram and Pinterest merge into 小红书. The apps are different, the interaction verbs are different, and the slang rolls over every six months.
This article is a snapshot. The nouns for the major platforms are stable; the verbs for chatting, posting, paying, and calling out a meme are the working vocabulary of anyone under sixty with a phone. Getting comfortable with them is how you stop being a tourist online.

1. The platform map
Eight apps do most of the work. Learn the names and the one-line pitch for each — when a coworker says "I saw it on 小红书" you need to know what kind of content that implies.
| App | Pinyin | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 微信 | wēi xìn | WeChat. Messaging, payments, mini-programs, social feed, official accounts, video calls. The one app you cannot live without in China. |
| 微博 | wēi bó | Weibo. Twitter-shaped. Celebrity gossip, breaking news, public discourse, trending searches. Literally "micro-blog." |
| 抖音 | dǒu yīn | Douyin. The domestic original of TikTok, same parent company (ByteDance), different content graph. Short vertical video, algorithmic feed. |
| 小红书 | xiǎo hóng shū | Xiaohongshu, often called RED. Lifestyle, beauty, travel, restaurants, product reviews. Instagram crossed with Pinterest, now a default search engine for young urban women. |
| 哔哩哔哩 | bī lī bī lī | Bilibili, usually said as B 站 (B zhàn — "B site"). Long-form video, anime/comics/games (ACG), tech tutorials, uni students. Danmaku comments fly across the screen. |
| 知乎 | zhī hū | Zhihu. Q&A platform, Quora-shaped. Long, sometimes expert answers. Name is classical grammar meaning "do you know?" |
| 豆瓣 | dòu bàn | Douban. Reviews and ratings for books, films, music. Forum communities. Older, slower, beloved by literary types. |
| kiū kiū | The older Tencent messenger, predates WeChat. Still heavily used by teenagers, gamers, and for file transfer between PCs. Known for avatars and a decades-deep archive. |
2. addContact() on WeChat
Adding someone on WeChat is the Chinese equivalent of the business-card exchange, the phone-number swap, and the "follow me on Instagram" moment rolled together. There are two standard mechanisms: a QR code scan, and a direct ID lookup.
| Phrase | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 加好友 | jiā hǎo yǒu | Add (as) friend. The generic verb for sending a contact request. |
| 加微信 | jiā wēi xìn | "Add on WeChat." The most common phrasing when exchanging contacts. |
| 微信号 | wēi xìn hào | WeChat ID. The stable username (not the phone number), used for search. |
| 二维码 | èr wéi mǎ | QR code. Literally "two-dimensional code." The universal handshake. |
| 扫一扫 | sǎo yī sǎo | "Scan-a-scan." Verb reduplication, the standard name for the scan feature in the app menu. |
| 扫我 | sǎo wǒ | "Scan me." What you say while opening your QR code for the other person. |
| 扫码 | sǎo mǎ | "Scan code" — general verb for scanning any QR, payment or contact. |
| 通过 | tōng guò | Approve / accept (a friend request). Literal: "pass through." |
The canonical exchange when meeting someone new:
| Sentence | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 你加我还是我加你? | nǐ jiā wǒ hái shì wǒ jiā nǐ? | "You add me or I add you?" — a stock line before any WeChat swap. |
| 扫我的码。 | sǎo wǒ de mǎ. | "Scan my code." (Shortened from 扫我的二维码.) |
| 我通过了。 | wǒ tōng guò le. | "I accepted (the request)." 了 marks completion. |
| 我的微信号是 ... | wǒ de wēi xìn hào shì ... | "My WeChat ID is ..." — when scanning isn't practical. |
3. chat() — messaging verbs
The basic chat surface. Three media types (text, voice, video), two call types (voice, video), and a whole sub-economy built on stickers.
| Phrase | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 发消息 | fā xiāo xī | Send a message. 发 (send) + 消息 (message). |
| 回复 | huí fù | Reply. |
| 转发 | zhuǎn fā | Forward. 转 (turn/pivot) + 发 (send). |
| 截图 | jié tú | Screenshot. 截 (cut) + 图 (picture). |
| 语音 | yǔ yīn | Voice message. Also the verb. |
| 视频 | shì pín | Video. Noun and verb ("to video-call"). |
| 语音通话 | yǔ yīn tōng huà | Voice call. |
| 视频通话 | shì pín tōng huà | Video call. |
| 撤回 | chè huí | Recall (a message). WeChat's unsend feature — very visible, and the other party still sees "X recalled a message." |
Stickers: the second language
Chinese chat runs on stickers the way English chat runs on emoji. Everyone curates a personal collection; there is a whole subculture of sticker battles.
| Phrase | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 表情 | biǎo qíng | Emoji or facial expression (literally "express-feeling"). Covers the native emoji set. |
| 表情包 | biǎo qíng bāo | Sticker pack. The big-format image stickers you collect and send, usually a meme-face or a reaction shot. |
| 斗图 | dòu tú | "Sticker war." 斗 (fight) + 图 (picture). When two people trade reaction stickers back and forth competitively. |
| gif | gif | Same loanword. Pronounced the English way. Used for animated image stickers. |
4. Social actions
The social graph inside WeChat is called 朋友圈 — literally "friend-circle" — and it's a feed of posts visible only to your mutual contacts. Outside WeChat, on Weibo / Xiaohongshu / Douyin, the actions map directly onto Western conventions: follow, like, comment, share.
The feed
| Phrase | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 朋友圈 | péng yǒu quān | Moments — WeChat's private social feed. Only mutual contacts see it. |
| 发朋友圈 | fā péng yǒu quān | "Post to Moments." Compound verb: 发 (send/publish) + 朋友圈. |
| 点赞 | diǎn zàn | Like. 点 (tap) + 赞 (praise). Also a noun: 一个赞 ("a like"). |
| 评论 | píng lùn | Comment. Noun and verb. |
| 分享 | fēn xiǎng | Share. |
Following and followers
| Phrase | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 关注 | guān zhù | Follow (an account). Literally "pay attention to." |
| 取消关注 | qǔ xiāo guān zhù | Unfollow. 取消 (cancel) + 关注. |
| 粉丝 | fěn sī | Follower. Phonetic loan of "fans." Used for both "my followers" (粉丝数) and "I'm a fan of X." |
| 博主 | bó zhǔ | Blogger / poster / account-owner. 博 (from 微博) + 主 (owner). |
| 网红 | wǎng hóng | Influencer. 网 (net) + 红 (popular). Literally "net-famous." |
Moderation
| Phrase | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 屏蔽 | píng bì | Block (from seeing posts). Soft version — they can still message you, but their posts are hidden. |
| 拉黑 | lā hēi | Blacklist. 拉 (pull) + 黑 (black). The hard block — they're removed from your contacts. |
| 举报 | jǔ bào | Report (to the platform). For harassment, illegal content, spam. |
5. Red packets & payments
China skipped the credit-card era. Most daily payments are QR-based, split between WeChat Pay and Alipay. The gift-money tradition — red envelopes at New Year and weddings — went digital early and is now a casual social gesture, a thank-you, a splitting-the-bill tool.
| Phrase | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 红包 | hóng bāo | Red packet / digital gift-money envelope. The traditional paper version is for holidays and weddings; the digital version is for any amount, any reason, anytime. |
| 微信支付 | wēi xìn zhī fù | WeChat Pay. Tencent's payment rails, built into the messenger. |
| 支付宝 | zhī fù bǎo | Alipay. Alibaba's payment system, the other half of the duopoly. Common for e-commerce and bills. |
| 转账 | zhuǎn zhàng | Transfer money (account-to-account, exact amount, with a note). Distinct from a red packet. |
| 二维码 | èr wéi mǎ | QR code — the universal payment surface. Every vendor has one printed on the counter. |
| 付款码 | fù kuǎn mǎ | Your payment QR — the one you show for the cashier to scan. |
| 收款码 | shōu kuǎn mǎ | Receive-payment QR — a vendor's or friend's code for you to scan. |
6. Content & trends
The trending-and-meme vocabulary. Much of it rotates every few months, but these structural terms — what counts as trending, what a meme is, how livestream commerce works — are stable.
| Phrase | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 热搜 | rè sōu | Trending search. The Weibo trending-list is called 微博热搜. 热 (hot) + 搜 (search). |
| 热门 | rè mén | Trending / hot / popular. Covers anything currently getting attention. |
| 网络流行语 | wǎng luò liú xíng yǔ | Internet slang. Literally "network popular speech." The catch-all for new-year's-worth of freshly minted phrases. |
| 梗 | gěng | Meme / running joke / bit. A particular reference, phrase, or gag that's circulating. "这是一个梗" = "that's a meme." |
| 直播 | zhí bō | Livestream. Noun and verb. |
| 带货 | dài huò | Livestream-selling. 带 (bring) + 货 (goods). Influencers hawk products in real time; the industry is enormous. |
| 养号 | yǎng hào | "Cultivate an account." 养 (raise/rear) + 号 (account). The practice of slowly warming up a new account — random likes, scattered browsing — so the algorithm trusts it before you start posting real content. |

8. Edge cases
Privacy: don't repost someone's Moments
朋友圈 is a semi-private space. Screenshotting someone's post and forwarding it outside their friend circle — or onto Weibo, where it becomes public — is a real breach of etiquette. If you want to reshare, ask first, or lean on 转发 within the app so the original poster controls reach.
三天可见 — the friction knob
A common privacy setting is 仅三天可见 (jǐn sān tiān kě jiàn) — "only visible three days." Anyone visiting your profile sees only posts from the last 72 hours; everything older is hidden. Variants: 半年可见 (half a year), 一个月可见 (one month). If you add a new contact and their 朋友圈 looks sparse, this is usually why — not that they don't post, just that you can't see the archive.
Voice messages vs text — a generational split
Older users (40+) lean heavily on 语音. It's faster to speak than to tap characters, and typing was never natural for people who learned writing by hand. Younger users find voice messages annoying — you can't skim them, can't search them, can't read them silently in a meeting. The polite move with a senior relative is to accept voice; the polite move with a peer is to send text unless there's a specific reason not to.
Registering without a Chinese phone number
Signing up for WeChat, Weibo, Alipay, and most domestic apps increasingly requires a mainland Chinese phone number and often a mainland ID document. The requirement tightens every year. Workarounds — borrowed phones, helpful friends, overseas SIM + help from a contact — exist but are fragile. If you plan to live in China, getting a local number is step zero; every other service hangs off of it.
微信 vs WeChat (the international version)
The app installed outside China is technically the same binary but routes through different servers, enforces different moderation, and can't always talk to Mainland-registered accounts transparently. Payments especially are fragmented: a foreign WeChat account may not be able to receive 红包 from a Mainland account, and vice versa. When in doubt, ask which version your counterpart is on.
