Above walking pace a motorcycle turns by being pushed, not steered like a car. Master that one backwards-feeling input and the whole corner opens up.

Here is the single weirdest fact in motorcycling, and it's true: to turn right at speed, you push the right grip away from you. Not pull โ€” push. To turn left, push the left grip. It feels completely backwards, and it's the only thing that actually steers a bike.

The strange part is that you already do it. Every rider who has ever held a corner above a crawl has been counter-steering without naming it โ€” the body learned the trick before the brain caught up. This chapter just drags it into the light so you can do it on purpose, quickly and on command.

That matters because frozen, vague, too-slow steering is one of the seven Survival Reactions from Chapter 1. The cure isn't bravery. It's one deliberate, well-timed push.

1Push the bar away to turn that way

Try it consciously on your next ride, somewhere safe and open. Rolling along at a steady speed, gently push the right grip forward โ€” like you're trying to push it away from your body. The bike leans to the right and turns right. Push the left grip, it goes left. Push harder, it leans and turns more. Ease off, it stands back up.

That's it. That's steering a motorcycle. The bars barely rotate โ€” what you feel is a push, not a big turn of the wheel. Below walking pace you steer a bike like a bicycle or a shopping cart, turning the bars the way you want to go. But the instant you have real speed, that flips, and the only thing that works is the push.

The name for this is counter-steering โ€” "counter" because you momentarily steer the front wheel the opposite way to where you want to end up. Push right (wheel points slightly left), bike goes right. Backwards, reliable, and the foundation of everything else in this book.

2Why it works (plain first)

Start with the picture, not the physics. When you push the right grip, the front wheel turns a hair to the left. That swings the front tire's contact patch โ€” the little patch of rubber on the road โ€” slightly out to the left, out from under the bike. The bike is no longer balanced over its wheels, so it does the only thing it can: it falls to the right. And a leaning bike turns. You've tipped it into the corner on purpose.

Think of balancing a broomstick on your palm. To make the top fall right, you flick your hand left. Same move: nudge the base out one way, the top falls the other. The push moves the contact patch; the bike falls; the lean turns it.

Now, after the intuition has landed, the names. Two things make the magic. Gyroscopic precession: a spinning wheel nudged at the bars tips along an axis 90ยฐ away, which starts the lean. And trail and steering geometry: once leaning, the front wheel naturally steers into the turn and the bike settles into a stable arc. You don't have to compute any of this. You push; the geometry and the gyros do the rest.

The headline is simple: the push doesn't turn the bike โ€” it leans the bike, and the lean turns it. Steering is really lean-control, and counter-steering is your throttle for lean.

3Push forward, not down

Here's where a lot of riders quietly sabotage themselves. They hear "press the bar" and start shoving down on it, leaning their weight onto a stiff arm. That doesn't rotate the bars cleanly โ€” it just loads the front and tightens you up.

Code's cue fixes it in three words: push forward, not down. Aim the push horizontally, straight up the road, like you're pushing the grip toward the corner. A forward press rotates the steering exactly the small amount needed and keeps your arm relaxed instead of propping you up.

It's a small distinction with a big payoff. A clean forward push is light, precise, and repeatable. A downward shove is heavy, vague, and feeds straight into the death-grip we'll dismantle in Chapter 6. Forward, not down โ€” every time.

The tell: if your shoulders rise and your arm locks straight when you steer, you're pushing down. Drop the shoulder, bend the elbow, and push the grip forward instead.

4Steer quickly โ€” the quick-flick

Once the push feels natural, the next upgrade is speed of input. A fast, committed, single push โ€” Code calls it the quick-flick โ€” beats a slow lazy lean every single time. And not by a little.

Picture the same corner, two riders. The lazy steerer eases the bike over gradually, so the bike turns in early and slowly, drifting toward the apex over a long, shallow arc โ€” and to make that long arc fit the corner, it needs more lean angle. The quick-flicker holds the bike upright longer, then snaps it down in one decisive move, turning in later on a tighter, more efficient arc that needs less lean for the very same corner.

Less lean is grip in the bank. Turning in later means more time looking through the corner and a straighter, faster line to the exit. So the same bend, taken with a faster input, costs you less lean angle and rewards you with more apex speed. Faster steering, slower heart rate.

Counter-intuitive but true: steering quicker lets you go slower into the work. A snappy flick uses less of your lean-angle budget, so there's more grip spare for speed, bumps, and surprises.

5One input, then relax

The flick is one clean push to set the lean โ€” and then you're done steering. Set it and trust it. A well-flicked bike will hold its arc on its own; your job becomes light hands and a smooth throttle, not constant fiddling at the bars.

The mistake is to keep pushing โ€” little nudge, little correction, another nudge โ€” all the way through the corner. That stream of tiny inputs is what Code calls hunting: the bike never settles, the line gets wobbly, and you burn attention you can't spare. Hunting is almost always a symptom of a bad turn-in: too early, too slow, too tentative, so you spend the whole corner trying to fix a flick you never committed to.

The cure is upstream. Get the one input right โ€” decisive, at the right moment โ€” and there's nothing left to correct. And the reason your hands can stay quiet enough to let the bike settle is the subject of the next chapter: being loose on the bars.

6"There's no time to steer!"

This is the famous one, straight out of the Twist of the Wrist II film. A corner rushes up, it's tighter than you thought, and a voice in your head screams there's no time to make this! So you freeze, or you trail in slow and wide and scary.

Here's the truth: there almost always is time. The feeling of no-time is a Survival Reaction, not a measurement. A motorcycle can change direction shockingly fast when you ask it to โ€” far faster than the panicked part of your brain believes. What feels like "no time" is really "I haven't committed to a push."

And notice the cure is not more inputs. Panicking with a flurry of little pushes โ€” hunting again โ€” wastes the very time you're worried about. The cure is one faster, more decisive push. A single committed quick-flick turns the bike in a fraction of the time a timid one does. When the voice says no time, the answer is to flick harder, not to flick more.

"No time to steer" is a feeling, not a fact. The bike has the time; your nerve doesn't. The fix is a single hard quick-flick โ€” more decisive, not more frequent.

7Beyond Code

Code popularized the quick-flick, but the push itself is universal physics, taught everywhere. The MSF's beginner courses drum in the same mantra โ€” "press right, go right; press left, go left" โ€” so even brand-new riders are counter-steering by their first afternoon. At the other extreme, Andy Ibbott's Performance Riding Techniques and the telemetry of MotoGP show the quick-flick taken to its limit: top riders snap the bike from upright to full lean in a heartbeat, banking exactly the grip we've been talking about into corner speed. From a wobbling student to Marc Mรกrquez at the apex, it's one idea scaled up โ€” push to lean, lean to turn, and the faster and more decisively you do it, the less lean you spend and the more corner you keep.
