Decide the corner
before you're in it

A corner taken on instinct is a guess you make at 60 mph. A corner with reference points is a plan you made earlier, when you had time to think.

Most riders steer a corner by feel: drift in, wait for the bend to scare them, then react. That works right up until the road does something you didn't expect — and then you're making big decisions with no time to make them.

There's a quieter way to ride, and it starts before you reach the corner at all. Pick a crack in the pavement, a sign, a patch of tar — and decide that's where you turn in. Now the corner isn't a guess you make at 60 mph; it's a plan you made earlier, when you had time to think.

Those fixed marks are reference points — RPs for short — and Code calls them the missing link. They're what turns a pile of separate techniques into one repeatable corner.

1Pick fixed marks on the road

Walk up to any corner and you can find three decisions hiding in it. Where do I turn in? Where do I clip the inside — the apex? Where am I far enough through that I can stand the bike up and get on the gas? Three questions, three answers.

The trick is to attach each answer to a thing you can see. Not "somewhere around here" — that crack. That fence post. That change in the road colour. Now the decision isn't yours to make in the heat of the moment; it was made on the way in, and the mark just triggers it.

That's all a reference point is: a fixed object on the road tied to a specific action. Turn-in RP, apex RP, exit RP. Three marks, and the corner stops being a panic and becomes a sequence you simply execute.

An RP is not the same as the apex itself. The apex is a place on your line; the reference point is the visible mark that tells you when to do something. You can use one to find the other — but the RP is the cue, not the action.

2Why RPs save attention

Back in Chapter 2 we said you ride on a fixed budget of attention — Code's $10 of attention — and you go broke at the worst possible moment, mid-corner, when everything wants your focus at once. Reference points are how you stop going broke.

Here's the move. Deciding something costs attention. Deciding it in advance, on the straight where you have spare focus, costs the same — but it costs it when it's cheap. By the time you reach the corner, the decision is already made; the RP just fires it. You're not paying full price under pressure; you pre-paid on the easy part of the road.

So an RP is really an attention trade: you move the expensive thinking out of the corner and onto the approach. Reference points are how you pre-pay the attention bill — and arrive at the bend with money left over for whatever surprises you.

3The turn point rules everything

Of the three RPs, one is the boss: where you turn in. It looks like a single small choice, but it quietly sets almost everything that happens afterward. Code counts about eleven things that hang off it.

Move your turn-in just a few feet and watch the dominoes fall: your brake point shifts, the lean angle you need changes, the spot where you can get back on the gas moves, your entry and exit speeds change, the whole shape of your line bends — and the number of mid-corner corrections you'll have to make goes up or down with it.

That's why getting sloppy about the turn point is so costly: it's not one mistake, it's eleven. And it's why nailing it is so powerful — fix the turn point and most of the corner sorts itself out downstream.

4Good RPs vs bad RPs

A reference point only works if it's there every time you look. So the whole game is picking marks that don't move and that you can spot early — while you still have time to act on them.

Good RPs are permanent and visible from a distance: a sign, a seam in the pavement, a curb, a crack, a patch of repair tar, the corner of a building. They'll be in the same spot on your next lap, next week, next year.

  • Use: pavement seams, painted lines, curbs, signs, posts, the edge of a shadow line baked into the surface, lasting colour changes in the tarmac.
  • Avoid: shadows (they move with the sun), puddles (they dry), other cars and bikes (they leave), gravel and debris (it scatters), anything that's only there today.

If you pick a moving mark, you've built your plan on something that won't be there when you need it — and you're back to guessing at speed.

5Consistency: the same corner every lap

Here's the payoff that ties this chapter back to the last one. In Chapter 6 we talked about a bike that "hunts" — wandering, getting little corrections, never settling. A lot of that hunting isn't the bike. It's you, re-deciding the corner halfway through because you never decided it on the way in.

Fixed RPs end that. Turn in at the same mark, clip the same apex, get on the gas at the same spot — and you get the same corner this lap that you got last lap. Same line, same speed, same calm. The bike stops getting yanked because you've stopped changing your mind mid-corner.

That repeatability is the real cure for hunting. A loose grip lets the bike settle; consistent reference points give it the same thing to settle into, corner after corner.

6Reading a new road

RPs are easy on a track you've ridden a hundred times. But the real skill is building them on a corner you've never seen — fast, on the fly, the first time through. There's a method.

Look for two things as you approach. First: where does the corner stop tightening? A bend that keeps closing on you is the one that bites; find the point where the inside edge stops curling away and starts opening again, and that's near where your apex wants to be. Second: where can I first see the exit? The moment the road ahead opens up and you can see where it's going is the moment you can start standing the bike up and feeding in throttle.

Find those two points, tie each to a visible mark, and you've built RPs on a strange road in a single pass. Ride it conservatively the first time — but ride it to your marks, not to your nerves.

On an unfamiliar corner, treat your first lap as survey, not attack. Go in slow enough that you have spare attention to look — to find where it stops tightening and where the exit opens — and pick your marks. Speed is what you add on the laps after you have the RPs, never before.
