Stop fighting
the motorcycle

Most of the wobble, the twitch, the nervousness you feel from the bike — that's you, piped in through tight arms. Put in your steering input, then relax, and let the machine do the job it was built for: staying stable.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: most of the wobble, the twitch, the nervousness you feel from the bike — that's you. A motorcycle wants to go straight and smooth out its own bumps. A death grip on the bars feeds every little disturbance straight back into the steering.

So far the book has been about what to do — crack the throttle on, push the inside bar, look where you want to go. This chapter is about what to stop doing. The single most common thing holding riders back isn't a missing skill. It's tension: hands clamped, arms locked, the whole upper body bracing against a machine that's trying to help.

Learn to be loose, and two things happen at once. The bike gets calmer, because you stop fighting its built-in stability. And you get sharper, because relaxed arms hand you back the attention you were spending on the squeeze.

1You create most of the problems

Keith Code puts it bluntly: "Riders create more problems than motorcycles are designed to handle." Read that twice. The machine under you is more composed than you give it credit for. Left alone, it will absorb a bump, shrug off a small weave, and track a steady line.

Think about the last time the bike felt twitchy or nervous over a rough patch of road. It's tempting to blame the suspension, the tires, the surface. But far more often the disturbance you felt was a loop: the bike moved a little, your tight arms passed that movement straight into the bars, the bars steered, the bike moved more, and around it went. You weren't reacting to a problem — you were manufacturing one.

That's the reframe for this whole chapter. The bike isn't out to get you. Most of what feels like the motorcycle misbehaving is the motorcycle faithfully obeying inputs you didn't know you were giving it.

A motorcycle is a self-correcting machine. Hit a bump or a small slide and, left to itself, it tends to damp the disturbance out and resettle. The rider's job is mostly to not get in the way of that.

2The death grip amplifies everything

Picture the path a road bump takes. The front wheel hits it. The forks move, the bars wiggle a fraction. If your hands are light, that wiggle dies right there — the front end does a tiny shimmy and self-centers. If your hands are clamped, that wiggle has nowhere to go but into your stiff arms, off your braced shoulders, and straight back down into the bars as a fresh steering input.

That's the death grip in one sentence: a tight grip pipes every wobble and bump straight into the steering. You become a rigid rod connecting the bar to the chassis, and a rigid connection transmits everything. The harder you hold on for safety, the more the bike feels like it's trying to throw you off — because you're the one shaking it.

You've met this enemy already. Back in Chapter 1 it was Survival Reaction #2: fear travels to the hands and you squeeze. It feels like control. It is the opposite of control. The clamp fights the bike's own steering corrections so it can never settle and follow the road.

3Use the bars, then let go

Loose does not mean limp. You still have to steer — and steering takes a firm, deliberate push on the inside bar (that's Chapter 5). The trick is what you do after the push. Put in your input to change direction, then relax your arms. Steer, then soften. The bar isn't something you hold; it's something you tap and release.

The California Superbike School has a famous check for this: flap your elbows. Mid-corner, see if you can lift and wiggle your elbows like a chicken. If you can, your arms are loose and the bike is free to do its thing. If you can't — if your arms are welded to the tank by tension — you've got a death grip you didn't even notice, and you're fighting the bike right now.

Try it as a habit. Every corner: input, then flap-check. It sounds silly. It is the fastest way to catch yourself tensing up, because tension is sneaky — it creeps back the moment the pace picks up or the corner looks intimidating.

4Unwanted inputs

The bars aren't the only way you talk to the bike, and tension isn't the only way you talk to it without meaning to. A motorcycle is exquisitely sensitive. It listens to your hands, yes — but also to your body weight, your feet on the pegs, and any sudden shove from any of them. Every one of those can become a steering input you never intended.

  • Stiff arms turn road bumps into steering, as we just saw — and they also resist the small corrections the bike wants to make.
  • Moving your body mid-corner — shifting in the seat after you're already leaned over — shoves on the bars through your arms and upsets the line.
  • Weighting a peg at the wrong moment nudges the chassis when you didn't ask it to.

The big practical rule that falls out of this: don't steer while you're still sliding across the seat. Get your body set first — hang off, get into position, settle — and only then put in your steering input. Do the two at once and your weight-shift and your bar-push fight each other, and the bike lurches instead of carving.

Same bump, two riders. With loose arms the bike absorbs the hit and settles fast. Flip to stiff arms and the same bump oscillates and takes far longer to recover — because your rigid arms keep feeding it back in.

5Stability is the bike's job

Why does a motorcycle want to go straight at all? It's not luck — it's built in, by geometry. The front wheel's contact patch sits behind the point where the steering axis would hit the ground. That gap is called trail, and it works exactly like the caster wheel on a shopping cart: it makes the front wheel want to follow, to center itself, to point where the bike is already going.

Combined with the gyroscopic effect of the spinning wheels, this means a moving motorcycle is genuinely trying to be stable. Knock the bars and the geometry pulls them back. Hit a bump and the front self-centers. The faster you go, within reason, the stronger this self-righting tendency gets. The bike is doing constant, tiny, automatic corrections, all by itself.

Here's the punchline: tension overrides that built-in stability. All that clever geometry only works if the front end is free to move through the small range it needs. Lock the bars with a death grip and you've disabled the safety system the engineers gave you. The bike wants to damp the wobble. Your tight arms won't let it.

    6Relaxing returns attention

    Back in Chapter 2 we framed your attention as a fixed budget — Code's $10 of attention. You spend it every second you ride, and when you go broke, the Survival Reactions take over. The point there was: don't waste your money.

    A death grip is one of the biggest leaks in the budget. Holding on hard is physically and mentally expensive. Tense muscles burn energy, flood you with the wrong kind of arousal, and quietly soak up attention that should be going to the road. Riders end a tense session exhausted and can't say why — they were white-knuckling the whole way, paying for it the entire time.

    So loosening your arms isn't just a stability trick. It's a refund. Loose arms hand you back budget for vision and judgment — for looking far ahead, picking your line, reading the corner. The relaxed rider isn't just smoother. They have more spare attention precisely when it matters most.

His big idea is rider and machine as one organism — the bike absorbed into your body schema until it's an extension of you, the way a hammer or a tennis racket disappears in a skilled hand. You stop fighting a tool the moment it stops being a separate tool and becomes part of your own body. That's the deep reason the death grip is wrong: you don't white-knuckle your own arm. The clamp is the signal that the bike is still a foreign object you're wrestling. Loosen up, ride enough, and the boundary dissolves — the machine starts doing its self-correcting work through you instead of against you, and "loose on the bars" stops being a rule you remember and becomes simply how you sit on a thing that is now, in every way that matters, part of you.
