When something surprises you at speed, you don't think — you flinch. The whole craft of riding is learning to replace that flinch, one trained move at a time.

A motorcycle is more stable, more capable, and more forgiving than you are. Most crashes don't happen because the bike ran out of grip — they happen because the rider panicked and did something the bike never asked for.

This book has one spine, borrowed from Keith Code's A Twist of the Wrist II: name the body's hard-wired panic moves, then learn the trained technique that beats each one. Everything else — the throttle rules, the steering, the lines, hanging off — hangs off that single idea.

So Chapter 1 is the enemy briefing. Meet the seven things your body wants to do under stress, understand why every one of them is wrong on a bike, and see how the rest of the book is built to dismantle them.

1The flinch

Picture it: you're leaned over in a corner, the road tightens more than you expected, and a jolt of "oh no" hits before any thought does. Your hands and right wrist move on their own. That's not a decision — it's a reflex, fired by the part of your brain that handles emergencies without asking permission.

Here's the trap. Reflexes are fast, which feels like an advantage. But fast and correct are different things. The flinch is fast and wrong. It chops the throttle, clamps the bars, and yanks your eyes to the thing scaring you — and each of those makes the situation worse, not better.

That gives us the thesis of the whole book in one line: riding well is not adding bravery — it's replacing instinct with trained technique. Skill is the set of correct moves you've practiced so heavily they show up before the flinch does.

Code's name for these reflexes is the Survival Reactions — the SRs. Notice the cruel joke in the name: they're called survival reactions, and on a motorcycle they're the things most likely to get you hurt.

2The seven panic moves

There are seven of them, and they tend to cascade — one trips the next. Read them as a checklist of what your body will try to do the moment a corner surprises you. For each, here's the feel, and why it backfires.

  1. Rolling off / chopping the throttle. The big one. Something startles you, your wrist snaps shut. It feels like slowing down to safety — but it pitches weight forward, compresses the front, and unloads the rear right when you need it planted. This is the master error; most crashes grow out of it.
  2. Tightening / death-gripping the bars. Fear travels straight to your hands and you squeeze. It feels like control. It's the opposite: a tight grip fights the bike's own steering corrections, so it can't settle and follow the road.
  3. A narrowed, frantic field of view. Under stress your vision tunnels down to a tight, jittery cone. It feels like focus. Really you've gone blind to everything you need — the exit, the line, the room you actually have.
  4. Fixed attention / target fixation. Your eyes lock onto the one thing you fear — the gravel, the edge, the oncoming car. It feels like watching the danger. But staring at a hazard is the surest way to steer into it.
  5. Steering toward where you're staring. The body follows the eyes. Lock your gaze on the ditch and your hands quietly aim the bike at the ditch. It feels like nothing at all — which is exactly why it's so dangerous.
  6. Steering errors. Frozen, hesitant, too-early, or far too much input. It feels like you can't make the bike turn — so you either freeze or over-shove the bars, and the bike lurches instead of carving.
  7. Braking errors. Grabbing too much, too little, or stabbing the brake mid-corner. It feels like scrubbing off danger. But a panic grab while leaned over asks the front tire for grip it's already spending on the turn.

3Why your reflexes are wrong

Your panic reflexes aren't a flaw. They're brilliant — for the situations they evolved to handle. Falling out of a tree? Freeze, grab, pull back, protect the head. Slipping on ice while walking? Stiffen up, drop your weight, stop moving. For a couple million years that toolkit kept your ancestors alive.

None of those situations involved a 400-pound machine that wants to stay upright and turns by being gently pushed, not yanked. A motorcycle's stability comes from speed and a steady throttle; your reflexes assume the cure for danger is to stop and clench. The bike disagrees, and the bike is right.

That's the core mismatch: instincts tuned for standing on two feet, running a machine that obeys an entirely different physics. The bike is far more stable than your nervous system assumes. Learning to ride is, more than anything, learning to trust that and override the reflex.

4The master error: chopping the throttle

Of the seven, one sits at the root. When you snap the throttle shut mid-corner, you don't just stop accelerating — you set off a chain in the chassis. Weight lurches forward onto the front wheel. The front fork compresses and the steering geometry sharpens. The rear goes light, losing the grip it was using to drive you through the turn.

Now the bike is doing three unwanted things at once — running wide or tucking, steering more than you asked, and scrabbling for rear traction — all because of one twitch of the wrist. Most riders then panic harder, which means more chop, and the cascade tightens.

So the single most valuable habit in all of riding is a steady, smooth throttle hand. It's so important it gets its own chapter and its own law. We'll meet it in Chapter 3 as Throttle Rule #1: once the throttle is cracked on, it's rolled on smoothly, evenly, and constantly through the rest of the corner.

Why does a steady throttle help? It keeps the bike's weight balanced roughly 40/60 front-to-rear — the split that gives both tires their best shot at grip. Chopping throws that balance away. Chapter 4 (the Traction Pie) shows exactly how much grip you're spending and where.

5Every skill is an antidote to one SR

Here's the structure that makes the rest of the book click. It is not a random pile of techniques. Each major skill in Twist of the Wrist exists to cancel one specific Survival Reaction. Learn the enemy, then learn its exact cure.

  • Chop the throttle?Throttle Rule #1 (Ch.3): a smooth, constant roll-on settles the chassis.
  • Death-grip the bars?Loose on the bars (Ch.6): light hands let the bike steer itself straight.
  • Tunnel vision?Wide view & reference points (Ch.7): a planned set of visual marks keeps your sight open.
  • Target-fixate on the hazard?Where you look (Ch.8): aim your eyes at the exit, not the danger.
  • Steer at what you stare at?The line (Ch.9): decide the path early so your eyes lead you down it.
  • Vague, frozen steering?Push to turn (Ch.5): one deliberate countersteer input turns the bike on command.

6You can't think your way out

Reading this chapter will not save you in a corner. In the half-second when the SR fires, there's no time to recall a list. If the trained move isn't already automatic, the flinch wins — every time.

That's what drilling is for. Practice a skill enough and it stops costing you conscious effort: it runs on its own, freeing up the bandwidth you'd otherwise burn just trying to remember what to do. A move you've drilled is cheaper than the flinch, so it gets there first.

Think of your attention as a fixed budget you spend every second you ride. New skills are expensive; drilled skills are nearly free. The whole game is to make your good habits so cheap that they outrun your reflexes. That budget is the subject of Chapter 2 — Code calls it your $10 of attention, and it explains exactly why you "go broke" at the worst possible moment.

7Beyond Code

Code names the enemy most clearly, but he isn't the only voice. Bernt Spiegel's The Upper Half of the Motorcycle frames the same fight as rider-machine unity — the goal of folding the bike into your body schema until skilled control sinks below conscious thought, which is just another way of describing a fully drilled SR cure. Nick Ienatsch's Sport Riding Techniques distills it to a mantra — "smooth is fast" — because every Survival Reaction is, at heart, a sudden, jerky input. This guide takes Code's spine — name the SR, drill the cure — and threads the best of the field through it, so you get one coherent method instead of seven conflicting ones.
