into the corner

Most riders are taught to finish all their braking in a straight line, then turn. Racers keep a feather of front brake on as they tip in, bleeding it off as they add lean — and whether you should do that on the street is the biggest argument in riding.

There are two halves to this chapter. The first is just good braking — how to use the front brake well, which almost no one is taught properly. The second is the controversial part: keeping a touch of that brake on as you turn.

They build on each other. You can't trail-brake safely until your basic braking is smooth and progressive, because trail braking is nothing more than the tail end of a good brake application stretched into the corner.

And it connects straight back to Chapter 4. Braking and cornering both spend from the same fixed slice of grip. Everything here is about handing that grip from one job to the other without ever asking for more than the tire has.

1Brake hardest at the end

Here's the mistake almost everyone makes: they grab a big fistful of brake the instant they decide to slow, then ease off as the corner arrives. Backwards. The right shape is a progressive squeeze — start gently, then build pressure, so you're braking hardest at the end of the braking zone, just before you turn.

Why? Because the moment you touch the front brake, weight shifts forward and presses the front tire into the road. A loaded tire grips harder. So the front has the most grip a half-second after you start braking, not at the first touch. Build into it and you use that loaded grip; stab it and you ask for maximum stopping before the tire is ready, which is how front tires lock and skid.

One more rule that saves lives: you have the most grip when the bike is upright. In a real emergency, the strongest, safest stop is a straight-up one. If you can, stand the bike up and brake hard in a straight line rather than trying to haul it down while leaned over.

Think of the lever like a dimmer switch, not a light switch. Squeeze, don't grab. A smooth build of pressure both loads the tire and tells you, through the lever, exactly how much grip you've got left.

2Braking shares the pie

Remember the traction pie from Chapter 4: your front tire has one fixed amount of grip, and every job you ask of it — braking, turning — eats from the same plate. There is no separate "braking grip" and "cornering grip." It's one pie.

That single fact governs this whole chapter. When the bike is straight up and not turning, the entire pie is available for braking, so you can brake your hardest. The moment you start to lean, cornering begins taking its slice — and whatever's left is all you have for the brake.

So braking and cornering are in a tug-of-war over one budget. You cannot have maximum braking and maximum lean at the same time; ask for both and you overdraw the account. The art of corner entry is spending that one pie deliberately as it shifts from one job to the other.

The clean way to say it: as lean goes up, available braking must come down — by exactly the amount the turn is now using. Trail braking is just obeying that trade smoothly instead of in a clumsy jump.

3Trail braking, defined

Now the move itself. Trail braking means you don't fully release the front brake before you turn. You keep trailing a little of it on as you tip the bike in, then gradually bleed it off as your lean increases — letting go completely somewhere around the apex.

Picture the two grip jobs trading places. At turn-in you're mostly braking, a little leaning. A moment later, a bit less brake, a bit more lean. Then less brake still, more lean — until the brake is gone and the corner is carrying all the grip. It's a smooth handoff, not a switch being flipped.

Contrast that with the standard method, where you finish braking, release entirely, then turn. That's an abrupt handoff: the front unloads as you let the lever go, and the bike's geometry changes right at the most delicate moment of entry. Trailing the brake keeps that transition continuous instead of jerky.

The mental image: brake and lean are on a see-saw. As one rises the other falls, and the total stays inside the pie. Trail braking is keeping that see-saw moving smoothly rather than slamming from one end to the other.

4Why bother trail braking

Three real payoffs, and they're worth understanding before you decide whether it's for you.

  • It keeps weight on the front. A trailed brake holds the fork compressed and the front tire loaded, so it grips and steers crisply. Let the brake all the way off and the front rebounds and goes light just as you ask it to turn.
  • It sharpens turn-in. A loaded, compressed front end steepens the steering geometry, so the bike drops into the corner more eagerly and willingly for the same push on the bars.
  • It lets you adjust entry speed deep into the corner. Carrying the brake means you can still scrub off a little more speed after you've started turning — a safety net if the corner tightens or you came in hot.
  • It tightens your line. A touch more front brake mid-entry pulls the bike onto a tighter radius, letting you fine-tune your path instead of committing to it all at turn-in.

Notice these are both a speed tool and a safety tool — that dual nature is exactly why the next section is so contested.

Brake early (classic Code)

Braking finished before turn-in. Front released, bike settled, then one clean steering input. Throttle cracked on right away (Rule #1). Turn-in is earlier, entry a touch slower, line a smooth arc.

Trail to apex (Ienatsch)

Brake still trailing at turn-in, bled off to the apex. Front stays loaded, turn-in is later and sharper, entry speed carried deeper, line drawn tighter — speed still adjustable mid-corner.

5The doctrinal split — the field's biggest argument

Ask two respected schools how to enter a corner and you'll get two genuinely different answers. This is the live debate in riding instruction, and both camps are full of fast, thoughtful people. Here's each side, fairly.

Classic Code / California Superbike School. Do your braking early and finish it while the bike is still upright. Release the brake, let the chassis settle, then turn and immediately get back to the gas — that's Throttle Rule #1. The logic: braking and turning both want the front tire, so keep them separate and you never overdraw the front; a settled chassis with the throttle on is the most stable, most forgiving way through a corner, and it's far easier to teach safely.

Nick Ienatsch / Yamaha Champions Riding School. Trail-brake nearly every corner, as both a safety tool and a speed tool. Their mantra: "the brake is always available." Keeping a feather of brake into the turn means you're never caught with no way to adjust if the corner surprises you, and it keeps the front loaded and accurate. To them, finishing all braking before turn-in throws away your best mid-corner control.

The gap has narrowed. The California Superbike School has since folded more trail braking into its own teaching, and both camps agree on the fundamentals — smooth, progressive inputs and respecting the traction pie. The argument is now more about emphasis and how to teach it than about physics. Don't read this as one side being wrong.

6The risk: don't trail past the limit

Here's the failure mode, and it's the reason trail braking has a reputation. The front tire's grip is one pie. At maximum lean, cornering is already eating most of it. Add too much front brake on top of that and you ask for more grip than exists — the front tire breaks loose and tucks, washing out from under you. It happens fast and it's hard to catch.

The cure is built into the move itself: trail gently, and bleed it off as you lean. The whole point is that brake pressure goes down as lean goes up. The danger only appears when you get that backwards — holding or adding brake while you're piling on lean. Done right, you're always backing off the lever exactly as the corner takes more grip.

This is why the basic skill comes first. A rider with a smooth, progressive, well-modulated squeeze can feel the front loading up and ease off it instinctively. A rider who only knows how to grab and hold has no business trailing the brake into full lean.

Brake down as lean goes up. Front brake plus deep lean is the classic front-end tuck. If in doubt — on cold tires, an unknown road, or gravel — finish your braking upright and trail little or nothing. The pie shrinks in the wet and the cold, and the front gives almost no warning before it lets go.

7Beyond Code

Code's instinct to keep braking and turning separate made braking simple and safe to teach, but the field has moved toward trailing the brake. Nick Ienatsch's Sport Riding Techniques and the Yamaha Champions / ChampU method built a whole curriculum around it — "the brake is always available" — treating a trailed front brake as the rider's main mid-corner safety net. And in modern MotoGP, riders carry the front brake to within a hair of the apex, sometimes braking while the bike is fully leaned, riding right on the edge of the very tuck this chapter warns about. Put it together and the truth sits in the middle: classic Code gives you the rock-solid foundation — squeeze progressively, respect the pie, settle the chassis, get on the gas — and trail braking is the advanced layer on top, a smooth way to hand grip from braking to cornering that adds control and adjustability, as long as you always bleed the lever off as the lean comes on.
